MP3 320 or WAV: which quality should DJs use?
For gigs, a well-encoded 320 kbps MP3 is enough: it's the format record pools deliver and that every DJ program and CDJ plays. WAV is only worth it for a track you buy to keep, or for a very demanding club sound system.
What's the difference between MP3 320, WAV, AIFF and FLAC?
- 320 kbps MP3: compressed, about 2.4 MB a minute. The compression removes detail the ear barely hears.
- WAV: uncompressed, about 10 MB a minute at CD quality. Limited tags (not always the BPM or the cover art).
- AIFF: uncompressed like WAV, but it keeps tags and cover art.
- FLAC: lossless compression, about half the size of WAV. Not every player reads it.
The sizes are rough figures, computed from the bitrate: 320 kbps gives 2.4 MB a minute, and CD quality (1,411 kbps) gives about 10 MB.
Can you hear the difference in a club?
Rarely. In a room with noise, a crowd and a sound system tuned for volume, a well-encoded 320 MP3 and a WAV sound almost the same. You mostly hear the difference on headphones, in a quiet room, on very dynamic tracks.
What you really hear is a bad file: one re-encoded from a weaker source, a YouTube rip, a clipped file. The bitrate on the label doesn't guarantee quality if the source was already degraded. Buy or download from a source that delivers the original file.
Which format should I put on a USB drive?
A 64 GB drive holds about 26,700 minutes of 320 MP3, against about 6,000 minutes of WAV. MP3 lets you carry your whole library plus a backup copy.
Think about compatibility too: MP3 plays everywhere. If you're playing on the club's gear, check ahead that it reads WAV, AIFF or FLAC.
What format does Bangerz Army deliver?
Bangerz Army delivers its tracks as 320 kbps MP3s, ready for Serato, rekordbox and Traktor. The file you download is the master file, not re-encoded on the way.
Each file carries the artist, title, BPM, Camelot key (for example 8A) and genre in its tags. The cover art shows the key and BPM, made for the CDJ-3000 screen.
Should I convert my MP3s to WAV?
No. Converting an MP3 to WAV doesn't bring back the detail the compression removed: you get a heavier file of the same quality. If you want WAV, buy the track in WAV at the source.
