Where can DJs find acapellas and instrumentals?

There are three sources you can trust: online music stores, when a release includes its acapella or instrumental; promos that labels send to DJs; and record pools. At Bangerz Army, the Acapella is one of a track's six versions, open from the Sergeant rank, or from day one on Pro Gold and Pro Infinity.

What are an acapella and an instrumental?

An acapella is the vocal alone, with no instruments. An instrumental is the reverse: the music without the vocal.

DJs use them for three things:

  • laying one track's vocal over another track's instrumental (a mashup);
  • running a transition while the vocal carries on over the change;
  • dropping a well-known chorus over a track the crowd knows less.

Where do I find acapellas?

Online stores

Some releases are sold with several mixes, sometimes including an acapella or an instrumental. Check the list of versions before you buy. See Where do DJs get their music?.

Label promos

Labels and artists send their releases to DJs, sometimes with the separate parts. It's free, but you have to be on their lists.

Record pools

A record pool is a subscription for DJs. Some offer acapellas alongside Clean, Dirty and Intro versions. See What is a record pool?.

Sites that hand out free acapellas without saying where they come from don't tell you who holds the rights. To play in public, prefer a source that tells you where the file comes from.

What does Bangerz Army offer?

On Bangerz Army, one track can come in six versions: Intro, Intro Clean, Intro Dirty, Clean, Dirty and Acapella. You can filter your search by version to show only tracks that have an Acapella.

Acapellas open from the Sergeant rank, or from day one on the Pro Gold and Pro Infinity plans.

Bangerz Army does not offer an Instrumental version. The Intro is the closest thing: it opens with a few bars of beat only before the vocal, which gives you time to lay an acapella on top. See Clean, dirty, intro: which version should I play?.

How do I lay an acapella over another track?

  1. Pick two tracks with close tempos. If the gap is more than a few BPM, the vocal will sound sped up or slowed down.
  2. Check the keys. In Camelot notation, the same code or a neighbor (8A with 7A, 9A or 8B) avoids a clash.
  3. Start the instrumental or the Intro of the second track, then bring the acapella in on the first beat of an 8 or 16 bar phrase.
  4. Cut the bass on the acapella so it doesn't muddy the bassline of the track underneath.

FAQ

Can I play an acapella I ripped from YouTube at a gig?

A file ripped from YouTube doesn't tell you who holds the rights. To play in public, use a source that tells you where the file comes from: a store, a label promo or a record pool.

Why can't I see Acapellas on Bangerz Army?

They open at the Sergeant rank, or from day one on Pro Gold or Pro Infinity.

Does Bangerz Army have instrumentals?

No, there is no Instrumental version. The Intro opens with a few bars of beat only, which helps you lay an acapella on top.

A track has no Acapella. Can I request one?

You can flag a track that's missing from the catalogue to our curators, and they look for it. A specific version only exists if the label or a remixer made it.
