What is a record pool (DJ pool) and how does it work?

A record pool, also called a DJ pool, is a subscription for DJs: you pay a monthly price and download tracks already prepared for mixing, in clean, dirty, intro or acapella versions. At Bangerz Army, the Pro Standard plan costs €24.99 a month for a catalogue of more than 230,000 tracks. Prices are in euros (EUR).

What is a record pool, in practice?

It is a site where a subscribed DJ downloads audio files made for the booth. It differs from an online store in two ways.

  • You don't pay per track. The subscription gives you access to the catalogue, within the limit each service sets.
  • The files are prepared for the mix. The same track comes in several versions, and the file tags already carry the BPM and the key.

The first record pool was created in 1975 by frustrated disco DJs in New York City. Record pool, DJ pool and DJ record pool all mean the same service today.

Why don't DJs download from Spotify or YouTube?

Streaming services sell personal listening. You can't download their files to your drive, so you can't use them as local files in your DJ software or play them offline. YouTube to MP3 converters give you degraded files with no BPM or key, made without the rights holders' agreement.

A DJ needs a local, clean file to beatmatch, loop and play even when the venue wifi drops. That is what a record pool provides.

What does a record pool contain: versions, edits, remixes?

A record pool offers several versions of the same track, each for a specific use. Bangerz Army has six:

  • Intro: the track opens with a few bars of beat only, so you can mix in without clashing with the previous vocal.
  • Intro Clean and Intro Dirty: the same intro, without or with the explicit lyrics.
  • Clean: explicit lyrics removed. For weddings, corporate events, radio.
  • Dirty: the original lyrics. For the club.
  • Acapella: the vocal alone, to layer over another track.

Beyond versions, the catalogue holds remixes, edits, mashups and bootlegs, labelled as such.

How does a record pool subscription work?

The principle is the same everywhere: pick a plan, pay, download. At Bangerz Army it works like this.

  1. Pick a plan: Pro Standard at €24.99 a month, Pro Gold at €69.99 every 3 months, or Pro Infinity at €129.99 every 6 months.
  2. Search by genre, BPM, key or version, and listen to a preview before you download.
  3. Download in 320 kbps MP3. Each file carries the artist, title, BPM, Camelot key (8A, 9B) and genre in its tags.
  4. Sort your tracks into crates, then drag them into your DJ software.

Downloads come with a monthly allowance that resets on the 1st of each month. Curators add the tracks and rate each one. If a track is missing, you can request it and the curators look for it. The files you download are for playing, not for reselling or sharing.

How much does a record pool cost?

Prices vary with the service, the plan length and the genres covered. Always compare the price per month, not the sticker price: a 6-month plan at €129.99 works out to about €21.67 a month, against €24.99 for the single month at Bangerz Army.

Before you pay, check three things: are the genres you play covered, does the download allowance fit how often you play, and is the site in your language. Bangerz Army is available in English and French.

How do I choose a record pool?

Start from what you play. A wedding DJ looks first for Clean versions and tracks everyone knows. A club DJ looks for the week's new releases in their genres. The criteria that matter are in How do I choose a record pool?.
